Janakpur (Terai region)

Janakpur in the eastern tarai is one of the historic cities of Nepal and lies 20 km south of the (East-West Highway) Mahendra Highway. Previously renowned as Mithila, it was the capital of the Videha (bodyless) spiritual rulers, the Janakas. Janaki or Sita was born to Sivadhwaga Janaka and was married to Rama, the King of Ayodhya and legendary hero of the great epic ‘Ramayana’. A famous center of learning in ancient times, Mithila once boasted hundreds of sages who contributed substantially to Hindu philosophy. One of the oldest texts produced by them is the well-known Upanishad Brihadarandyaka.

Predominantly inhabited by Maithili people, Janakpur has its own language, script and a unique artistic tradition and rich culture. Recently, religious Mithila art has found its own niche in the art world both locally and internationally. Surprisingly, Japan has shown immense interest in this art form even dedicating a museum to Mithila art. Many hotels and restaurants in Kathmandu now feature Mithila art in their decor.

  8. Named after the legendary King Janak, Janakpur was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Mithila, the native country of goddess Sita, the wife of the Hindu god Ram and the heroine of the great Hindu epic Ramayana. Today Janakpur stands as one of the interesting places among all the towns of Terai

Janakpur has become a great piligrimage site for Hindus today. The most sacred sites are the Janaki Mandir, dedicated to goddess Sita, the Ram Sita bibaha(marriage) mandir, built over the spot where Ram and Sita were said to have been married, Ram Mandir, dedicated to god Ram and the holy pond Dhanush Sagar. Hundreds of Nepali and Indian devotees come here every year to pay their respect to the goddess at this temple.

  12. Janakpur city is the birth place of Goddess Sita, and is the home of the unique Mithila culture in Nepal. This is a popular city in the terai region. (Terai = lower part of Nepal having Flat-Land). Janakpur is also known as Janakpurdham (Dham in Nepali means a scared region) It has a temple named Janaki, which is dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Sita. This region also offers an excellent opportunity for visitors to learn about Mithila culture, and people from in and around this peaceful region of Nepal. Hindu pilgrims from India and Nepal visit this region to pay their respect to the Goddess, while many foreigners make a side-trip to the region to learn about the unique Janakpur-life!

  14. Nepal is one beautiful place in the World. In Nepal there are many visit place. Than we called "Once is not enough". although these places are in a suitable place they are not having a great scope of tourism due to the lack of required infrastructures of the transportation and other essential motivation and good behaviour to the tourists who are coming here ...
Add post about more place like ghandruk, Helambu, and many more.
    keep on trying.
    Well done
